  3. 03Sanchin三戦Three battlesThe fundamental Goju-ryu kata. Trained with the whole body tensed and deep breathing (ibuki), it builds the posture, structure and endurance every other kata demands.Origin: Kanryō Higaonna / Chōjun Miyagi
  4. 04Gekisai Dai Ichi撃砕第一Attack and smash, no. 1The first of the two kata Chōjun Miyagi created in 1940 for beginners: direct techniques, long stances and a vigorous rhythm, to teach the basics of the style clearly.Origin: Chōjun Miyagi (1940)
  5. 05Gekisai Dai Ni撃砕第二Attack and smash, no. 2Miyagi's second beginner kata. It repeats the structure of Gekisai Dai Ichi and adds open-hand blocks, the neko-ashi-dachi stance and the style's first circular movements.Origin: Chōjun Miyagi (1940)
  6. 06Saifa砕破Smash and tearThe first classical Goju-ryu kata after the Gekisai. Short and explosive, it teaches escapes from grabs, back-fist and hammer-fist strikes, and the style's first turns.
  7. 07Tensho転掌Turning handsCreated by Chōjun Miyagi, it is the soft counterpart of Sanchin: circular, flowing open-hand movements with the breath following each gesture. The jū side of Goju-ryu.Origin: Chōjun Miyagi
  8. 08Seienchin制引戦Control, pull, fightA long, heavy kata trained almost entirely in shiko-dachi, with no kicks. It teaches fighting close to the opponent, with pulls, controls and short strikes, and demands strong legs and steady breathing.
  9. 09Shisochin四向戦Battle in four directionsIt combines the Sanchin structure with open-hand techniques (nukite) in four directions, arm locks and circular blocks. It is said to have been one of Chōjun Miyagi's favorite kata.
  10. 10Sanseiru三十六手Thirty-six handsA numbered kata, like Seipai, Seisan and Suparinpei. It works low joint kicks, double blocks and diagonal entries while keeping the Sanchin base.
  11. 11Seipai十八手Eighteen handsA kata of varied rhythm, with turns, level changes, throws and hidden techniques. One of the most studied in bunkai for the richness of its applications.
  12. 12Seisan十三手Thirteen handsOne of Okinawa's oldest kata, found in several styles. In Goju-ryu it combines a first part in Sanchin, with fast punches, and a second part with kicks, turns and open-hand strikes.
  13. 13Kururunfa久留頓破Holding on long and striking suddenlyAn advanced kata marked by the contrast between slow movements and sudden bursts. It works open-hand blocks, joint controls and the neko-ashi-dachi stance.
